FAQ: Everything You Need to Know for Your Day on the Rhine

What is there to experience? Rheinböötle (or Rhyböötle)!

Rent a professional inflatable boat, kayak, or SUP for a leisurely trip from Stein am Rhein to Diessenhofen-Gailingen or for the longer journey all the way to Schaffhausen.

Where does it start and where does it end?

Start your Rhine boat rental near the small harbor of Stein am Rhein and land fully relaxed at the Rheinuferpark in Diessenhofen-Gailingen or near the historic town of Schaffhausen - all three places are well connected by public transport for stress-free coming and going.

Is it safe?

Our inflatable boats and kayaks are real adventurers and can withstand more than just the Upper Rhine. Plus: life jackets, dry bags and instruction included so that you and your team can have fun and be safe on the water. Of course, water has its pitfalls, which is why there is a recommended minimum age and you and your fellow passengers should have some swimming skills.

Do I need to book in advance, or can I just show up?

We are often fully booked, especially on sunny weekends. To ensure your boat, kayak, or SUP is reserved for you, we strongly recommend that you make an online reservation. Walk-in rentals are only possible if equipment is currently available.

What boats are available?

We have the right equipment for every group size:

  • Inflatable boats: Ideal for groups of 3 to 6 people.

  • Kayaks: Perfect for 1 to 2 people who want a more active experience.

  • SUPs (stand-up paddleboards): The most relaxing way to explore the Rhine while standing.

How strenuous is the trip?

The Rhine has a gentle current, but it doesn't just carry you along on its own. You'll need to paddle a bit, especially when there's a headwind. In a kayak or on a SUP, you'll be a bit faster and more maneuverable, but you'll also need more stamina than in a leisurely inflatable boat.

Can I bring my dog or cat with me?

For safety reasons and to protect our equipment (especially the air chambers of the inflatable boats and SUPs), dogs and other pets are not allowed on board. Thank you for your understanding.

What happens in bad weather?

Safety comes first. In the event of a thunderstorm warning, storm, or flooding, we will cancel the tours and you will receive a refund. If it is only slightly cloudy or drizzling, the rental will go ahead as scheduled. However, you can reschedule free of charge up to 48 hours before the scheduled time if the forecast doesn’t look like “boat weather.”

Do I need identification on the water?

Yes, definitely! The Rhine forms the border between Switzerland and Germany here. Please bring an ID or passport, as border guards conduct random checks. It’s best to pack your documents in our waterproof pouches.

How do I get back after the tour?

The logistics are simple: Drop off your gear at the destination by 7:00 p.m. at the latest. From there, take a leisurely walk to the nearest train station (Schaffhausen or Diessenhofen) and take the SBB back to Stein am Rhein. Trains run every 30 minutes.

What to do when the weather is not looking good?

If the weather is too bad for you, you can reschedule free of charge up to 48 hours before the start or cancel for a small fee - it's easy. You can find all the details about our cancellation policy here with just one click.

Do you, as the organiser, cancel for any reason?

Only when Mother Nature shows her wild side - think floods or thunderstorms - do we take a break. But a little rain won't stop us; the adventure continues! If you are unsure, please give us a call.

Changed plans? No problem!

Flexibility is our middle name. Change your booking free of charge up to 48 hours before the big day. Another change? That's where a small fee comes into play. Less than 48 hours and you'll be charged the full price. All information about the rules of the game can be found here.

Who are we?

We’ve been active on the Upper Rhine since 2024. Until now, our home turf has been the Aare River around Bern and the neighboring lakes, where, as the largest Aareboat rental company, we’ve been making water lovers happy for many years. Thanks to enthusiastic feedback, we’re now venturing onto the Rhine. You can find out more about our spirit of adventure in the “About Us” section.

Is your offer limited to just one river?

Aareböötle is the quintessential Swiss summer activity. We’ve been operating on the Aare River in the Bernese Oberland since 2007 and know exactly what matters. Our focus is entirely on the route from Uttigen to Bern. Here, we offer you top-notch service and professional equipment to ensure your river adventure is safe and unforgettable. www.aareböötle.com
